Why Healing Trauma Makes Us Better Parents 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

Breaking generational trauma starts with our own healing—acknowledging past wounds, understanding their impact, and actively working to unlearn harmful patterns.

Studies show that adults who have recognized the effect of trauma in their own lives are calmer and more mindful in the face of children’s challenging behaviors. Instead of: “Why is my child behaving this way?” we’re able to stay present, grounded, and ask ourselves, “Why am I feeling so overwhelmed or triggered by this?”

There is a creative exercise that will help you not only find clues about your childhood and lifelong wounds and how they’ve affected you, but also understand how they’ve helped you grow in unexpected ways (like a 🌳) and how you can continue that growth now.

We are all aware that love is our most natural state of being, but what does it mean to truly love someone? ❤️

According to Thomas Merton, an American mystic 🧙‍♂️ and poet ✒️, the foundation of love is "the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image." He goes on to say that "if in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them."

What do you think? Does Merton have it right, or is he misguided on this topic? 🤔

Let us hear your thoughts in the comments below. 👇
