The fuse was lit some time ago,
And the spark has been gradually snaking toward the powder.
We have been watching it,
Awaiting it,
Dreading it,
Sensing it was soon to blow.

Some are eager.
They’ve been fanning the flames,
Shaking the jar,
Stirring the pot.
They can’t wait to see the fireworks,
The mushroom cloud,
The glorious unraveling.

Others are petrified.
Too stunned to move,
Deer in the headlamps,
Blinded by the light,
Frozen in the frigid, numbing moment before the inevitable boom.

As for me, I pray.

Awesome God,
I tremble in Your mystery,
And I seek shelter in Your embrace.
I can’t decipher Your thunder,
But I trust Your wisdom
And surrender to Your will.
I know that You do not rage,
But You raise Your voice at times to regain our truant attention.

Help us to hear and heed Your call.
To seek and see Your presence.
To mind and mend our way.

Lead us on the path of peace.
Transform our foes to allies.
Heal your hurting children.
Mend our rifts and patch our broken hearts.

Let us remember that You are one.
Let us extinguish the fuse before it lights the keg.
Let us end this conflict swiftly so that we can finally dismantle our implements of war and beat them into plowshares.
