What Do You Think Is the Number One Cause of Why Humanity Keeps Itself Divided?

At the end of our evolution, we will be compelled to unite as one group with threads of love tying us together. The question is: what will bring us to that point? When and how exactly will we begin to move toward such a state, which is so very opposite from what we see in the world today? Also, why would it even be worthwhile?

By nature, we care about ourselves and cannot do anything unless we feel a certain benefit from it. We need energy for every movement, whether it be physical, emotional, or mental, and such energy is available to us only when we see a better state ahead.

Sometimes this internal calculation happens automatically, without our awareness, for instance, when the body shifts the position of a hand or leg. At other times, we are aware of the calculation and act accordingly. For instance, we speak or behave in a certain way toward someone because it benefits us to present ourselves in such a way.

Our entire life is about maximizing pleasure with minimal effort, that we experience less suffering with more enjoyment. What exactly gives us pleasure? That is where social values, our upbringing, and our innate tendencies come into play. Together, these shape our internal definitions of what is good and bad.

Therefore, it is in our nature to always look for ways to feel better. This is how every living creature operates, including humans. We can even describe it as a universal law, i.e., that we seek to feel as comfortable and complete as possible. This is where our egoistic nature constantly leads us.

Can We Change?

Back to the initial question: how can we change our nature and start caring for others instead of ourselves? To love others? To think about their well-being? To dedicate all of our abilities and resources to others, so much so that nothing remains for ourselves except a single point of desire to bestow goodness on everyone?

We might compare this to a mother caring for her baby. Her nature constantly guides her to worry about them, what they need, how to soothe them, and what else she can do to help. She has no other concern, as her baby fills her whole world.

If a similar attitude of love is required toward all of society, it clearly seems unrealistic. So why is it said that “Love your neighbor as yourself” is actually the general law of reality, a law we will eventually be forced to follow?

Another question also arises, that if love is really the great goal we are destined to reach, why have we arrived at the complete opposite of that state, where people have such inflated egos that they exploit others more and more, striving to dominate them, even enjoying their success at others’ expense? Do you know any other creature in nature that thrives on others having less, that derives pleasure from their failure, or measures their own success only in comparison to others?

Imagining a Better World

If we were to fantasize for a moment about this utopian state, where everyone loves everyone, it might indeed feel like the ultimate self-fulfillment. Perhaps. But what means do we have to achieve that?

Over the generations, several books have been written on the topic. There were even attempts to create villages, cities, even countries where people could live with mutual care, but all such efforts failed.

Over time, we became smarter and better understood our egoistic nature. We realized that we could not rise above it. So we moved toward limiting individuals through laws and punishments to reduce harm to others and to society.

We now have lawyers, accountants, sociologists, psychologists, and politicians, i.e., entire systems managing relationships in cities, countries, and the world, letting us coexist and even profit through shared resources. But on the inner emotional level, in terms of transforming our attitude toward others from egoistic and exploitative to loving and considerate, it seems that we have only regressed.

A Global Crisis

This brings us to the crisis we face today, a very strange, multi-faceted crisis highlighting a common root to the various problems across all aspects of life.

On one hand, we have built a highly interconnected world where we all depend on one another. On the other hand, each person’s ego has grown so strong that it prevents them from even seeing others. In a reality of global threats like nuclear war, economic collapse, or climate crisis, we can rapidly descend into very dangerous situations.

Even in private life, the growing ego causes immense difficulties, whether in relationships, parenting, schools, workplaces, business, and even on the roads. Wherever there is another person, tensions rise. Our ability to coexist with others is declining.

We could continue discussing the symptoms of growing egoism, but the core reason remains is the same. Life is bringing us to a crossroads. Either we begin working together to rise above our narrow egoism toward connection and love, or we will suffer until we eventually come to that realization.

Transforming Society

So, what force can compel us to move toward mutual love?

As mentioned, humans are social beings influenced by the values instilled by their environment. Therefore, if we collectively change the social value system so that every bad attitude toward others becomes disgraceful and good relations are honored and respected, we will gain the power to develop in the right direction. If people feel, so to speak, a blow for bad behavior and a stroke for good, they will be forced to improve.

To achieve this, media, education systems, and cultural institutions, which are all tools at our disposal, must be enlisted. We need to condemn narrow egoism and uplift values like consideration, closeness, participation, support, assistance, and connection, eventually reaching love. This process requires us to study human nature and, based on our findings, develop society and its influence mechanisms accordingly.

Like it or not, life is placing us all in the same boat. This means we are all responsible for one another, by definition. What does this mean? If someone drills a hole in the boat beneath their own seat, water will flood in and sink us all. This is mutual responsibility in its negative egoistic expression. Our joint task is to realize its full positive potential.

A New Humanity

As we progress, we will understand that our entire development as a species within nature has brought us to this exact point, a general crisis in egoistic relationships, from which we will give birth to a new person and a new humanity.

In the new web of connections we build between us, we will discover a flow of an internal force that dwells in nature’s depths, a force of positive bestowal, love, and giving. It is a life force that gives rise to all development. We will acquire its qualities, draw closer to balance with it, and then understand that we had to develop in opposition to it, just so we could perceive its nature through contrast. By discerning these opposites—ego versus love—we will develop the ability to grasp how exalted, powerful, eternal, and complete is the force of love, and we will merge with it more and more.

Therefore, the law “Love your neighbor as yourself” becomes a necessary condition to reach humanity’s next evolutionary stage, a harmonious and perfect state of fulfillment, enjoyment, and pleasure like nothing else in this world.
